Did you know you can join a ski or snowshoe group on our website, to meet others to do these activities with?
Whether you’re new to cross-country skiing, a seasoned veteran looking to widen your network, or simply want to save on gas, you might consider joining one of our social ski groups! These groups are a way for members to meet (or reunite!), stay in touch, and enjoy the great outdoors together.
How do they work?
Six groups have been created on the KNSSC website and folks are encouraged to sign up and communicate through their group’s page. We’ve put together a short tutorial below on how to a) sign up for groups and b) enable notifications so you don’t miss anything.
“Skiers, especially new members who might not have anyone to ski with, could find it intimidating to go up to Kelowna Nordic on their own,” says KNSSC secretary Laurie Cole. “Plus, it can be fun to ski in a group or with a friend! It gives people a way to connect with other members.”
Even for folks who ski regularly at Kelowna Nordic, it sometimes happens that friends aren’t always available to ski at the same time. Social ski groups offer the opportunity to expand your ski network in a low-key way.
And, if saving the planet is up your alley, carpooling with your ski group is a great way to reduce your collective carbon footprint.
Join a ski group by following these steps
Step 1: Join Kelowna Nordic as a site member* if you haven’t already done so
Select “Login/Signup” in the upper right corner
“Log In” if you are already a site member or “Sign Up” if you’re new to the site
*Note: being a site member is different from being a club member (season’s pass holder) – we encourage you to be both!
Step 2: Look for the groups you want to join
Navigate to Community and click on ‘Groups’ in the drop-down menu
View the list of groups you have joined (“My Groups”) or may want to join (“Suggested Groups”)
Hover over a group you are interested in to see a blue “Join” button and click it
If the group is public, you will become a member as soon as you join. If the group is private, your request to join will be reviewed and approved by the group administrator.
Step 3: Choose how you want to receive notifications from the group
Click the 'More Actions' icon at the top right of the group
Click Notification Settings
Choose one (or more) of three ways (Website, Email, Mobile) to receive group notifications. Slide the notifications toggle to turn on / view the notification options for that method.
Select (or de-select) the checkboxes next to the updates you want to know about:
Posts: When someone posts in the group
Comments: When someone comments in the group
Reactions: When someone reacts to your post (e.g. with an emoji 👍🏼)
Group Updates: When an admin makes changes to the group
New Members: When new members join the group
Note: look for the bell icon to see website notifications when you’re logged in to the site
